We are pleased to announce the release of MLton (formerly called
smlc), an optimizing compiler for Standard ML.
MLton compiles the full SML language as specified in The Definition of
Standard ML (1997), including the module system, and contains a mostly
complete implementation of the basis library. It generates standalone
executables for X86 machines running Linux. MLton uses whole-program
analysis and optimization to generate high performance code. The
performance is often significantly better than Standard ML of New
Jersey. MLton also has facilities for heap checkpointing and an
interface to the GNU multiprecision library for fast IntInf
operations.
