Thanks, reducing the maximal heap to 200 MB (to avoid any paging) results in 
successfull compilation in 7:20 min. It is interesting, that an -O3 
instead of -O1 doesn't speedup the mlton executable. (My experience with
Gambit scheme showed, that the optimization level of the C compiler does
matter, but not much.)
