The problem is a stupid bug in the gprof program. If there are no function
calls (i.e., if you link it with -pg but don't compile it that way) then it
will fail. Of course if you compile it with -pg then the timings are all off.
Here is the shell file I use which fixes the gmon.out file by adding a field
which is the record for function calls, but which is all 0:
