C:\WINNT often doesn't exist on Windows. Sometimes it is C:\WINDOWS, but
it could be anything!
Would it be better to use the system facilities for getting a temporary
file?
On Unix: tmpfile(3)
On Windows: GetTempFileName and GetTempPath
