I lie! Here's how to reliably detect the system arch/os:

mlton -target XXX -verbose 2 | grep "target arch" | cut -d" " -f6 | tr
"[A-Z]" "[a-z]"

I'm only half joking. The regression script is going to use mlton -target
XXX anyway. Why use bin/platform?
