re make vs. GNU make, it is a pain.  I'm rather surprised that FreeBSD doesn't
use GNU make.  The GNU extensions are pretty convenient.  Could it be that
FreeBSD installs GNU make some where.  I see that under Red Hat there is a
/usr/bin/gmake which is just a symlink to /usr/bin/make (which is, of course,
GNU make) so perhaps gmake is on FreeBSD.
