True.  I checked in a change to mlton/Makefile that prints a message.

No.  I never bootstrap that way.  I always use an older version of
MLton.

I checked in a fix to bin/upgrade-basis to avoid the Solaris problem.
I now have a bootstrap running with 20030716 that is working fine.
