Henry, did you try out the new TextIO implementation on your stuff yet? I don't expect much of an improvement, since I think the optimizer was probably eliminating streams in your case. But I'd like to be sure. Assuming there is still no improvement, the only way I can see to proceed is for you to do some profiling to see if you can localize the problem.
